The Nakanbé Water Agency (AEN) in collaboration with Faso Koom proceeded on Friday May 13, 2022 to the provisional reception of the cleaning works of the Toukoumtoré dam located in the rural commune of Koubri.
Indeed, the dams in Burkina Faso are confronted with the problem of silting which considerably reduces the availability of water. It is estimated that soil losses in the watersheds range from 3 to 9 tons/ha/year in the Southwest, 8 to 15 tons/ha/year in the Central Plateau and up to 28 tons/ha/year in the Northern Region. These losses of soil result in the filling of water reservoirs in Burkina in the form of siltation / silting of about 2.5% per year (data provided by the NEA).
This cleaning action on the Toukoumtoré dam is part of the implementation of the project “Support to the reinforcement of institutional, organizational and technical capacities of the Local Committees”, This cleaning action on the Toukoumtoré dam is part of the implementation of the project “Support to institutional, organizational and technical capacity building of the Local Water Committees of the Nakanbé Water Agency’s Area of Competence or FASO KOOM II” implemented by the consortium formed by the Dutch Water Authorities, the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and the NEA thanks to the financing of the European Union.
FYI:
Dam cleaning is an operation consisting of extracting and exporting sediments that have accumulated by settling (siltation/siltation) in the dam bed.
