Decree No. 2003-286/PRES/PM/MAHRH of June 9, 20031 on the determination of the areas of competence of the water resources management structures subdivided the national territory into five (05) management areas:
the Cascades water resources management area
the Mouhoun water resources management area
the Nakanbé water resources management area
the Gourma water resources management area
the Liptako water resources management area

The Comoé national basin with its 17,590 km2 represents 7% of the country's surface area. It has about forty (40) dams, the most important of which are Douna (50 million m3), Moussodougou (38 million m3), Lobi (6 million m3).

Water resources of the Mouhoun management area
The surface area of the Mouhoun Agency's jurisdiction is 91,036 km2. Its hydrographic network is made up of the :

Lower Mouhoun sub-basin
Banifing sub-basin.
The most important dams are Samendéni (1.05 billion m3) for hydro-agricultural purposes and drinking water supply, Sourou (600 million m3) for hydro-agricultural purposes, Soum (83 million m3)
Water resources of the Nakanbe management area
The surface area of the Agency is approximately 60,000 km2. Its hydrographic network is made up of the main watercourses which are the Nakanbé, the Nazinon and the Sissili. It has more than 500 dams and lakes, including the largest in the country. The most important works of the Nakanbé basin are
Bagré (1.7 billion m3) for hydroelectric and hydroagricultural purposes;
Ziga (200 million m3) for drinking water supply
Toecé (75 million m3) for hydro-agricultural purposes
Guitti (44 million m3) for drinking water supply
Loumbila (42 million m3) for drinking water supply
Lake Bam (40 million m3), the largest lake in the country.
Water resources of the Gourma management area
The surface area of the Liptako area is about 50,000 km2 and includes about a hundred water reservoirs, the largest of which are Kompienga (2.05 billion m3), Tapoa (8.7 million m3), Tandjari (4.6 million m³). The mobilization capacities of the Gourma management area will be increased with the construction of the Sanguin dam (123 million m3). The major sub-basins of its area are

Water resources of the Liptako management area
The surface area of the Liptako Water Agency is about 53,000 km2 with about forty water reservoirs, the most important of which are Yakouta (26 500 000 m3), Yalgo (10 million m3), Manni (6 million m3). The area has fairly large natural ponds such as the Oursi and Dori ponds. Its hydrographic network is made up of the :
